Bio

Nancy White Cassidy is an American acrylic and mixed-media artist whose work explores memory, spirituality, environmental stewardship, and social justice through richly layered, materially dense surfaces. Working primarily on panel, she builds compositions using molding paste, metal leaf, collage, acrylic paint, and found objects. Her visual language moves between abstraction and narrative, using material accumulation and symbolic form to draw attention to surface as both physical presence and carrier of meaning.

Cassidy earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Western Connecticut State University and has spent decades teaching art throughout New England and New York City. In addition to her work in schools and educational programs, she served as a private art tutor to comedian Joan Rivers. Earlier in her career, she created illustrations for educational materials for children, an experience that continues to inform her interest in visual storytelling, symbolism, and structure.

A period of personal transformation led her to the study of astrology and various religious traditions, which now inform her artistic practice. Her work draws on intuition, spiritual inquiry, and lived experience to reflect on humanity’s relationship to the natural world and to one another. Engaging with contemporary concerns including environmental degradation, women’s rights, and social responsibility, her paintings hold tension between urgency and resilience.

Recurring motifs drawn from family history play a central role in her work. Fabrics, patterns, and handmade materials from her childhood reference the sewing traditions of her mother and aunts, whose creativity and resourcefulness shaped her early understanding of making. These references transform personal memory into reflections on inheritance, survival, and continuity.

Through the fusion of contemporary mixed-media techniques and personal symbolism, Cassidy creates work that connects material history with lived experience. Her paintings invite contemplation of the forces—emotional, historical, and environmental—that shape human lives across time.

Cassidy lives and works in Brunswick, Maine, with her husband and two cats.
